  • The one where Lucy learns to crawl

My mom was visiting today and in passing she mentioned that my brother's baby, Bethany, who is one day older than Lucy, just started crawling. So upon Nana's departure I immediately spread a blanket on the floor, put Lucy on her tummy and informed her, "Ok, Missy! If Bethany can crawl then you can too! Get to it." I put her favorite toys out of reach, backed slowly out of the room so she couldn't beg her way out it, and waited. She desperatly wanted her toy but at first she just looked around, unsure of what to do. I coached from the hallway, "You have to crawl!" She ignored me and focused intently on the job at hand. Next thing I know, she's hollering and waving wildly at her toys, "Ah badaba ah ba uh uh uh mwah!"  She seriously sounded like she was trying to coax them into coming to her instead of the other way around! I poked my head in the living room and told her, "You can't talk them into coming to you. Find another way to get them. Maybe crawl?"  I left the room again and waited quietly while Lucy tried to figure it out. I re-entered the room a few minutes later and much to my suprise she had her toys! Only she hadn't crawled to them. She had remained where I set her and simply pulled the blanket closer and closer to her until the toys slid within her grasp. I picked her up and squeezed her tightly. "Lucy! How clever you are! You're a genius baby!", I exclaimed. She may not be mobile yet but she's well on her way.
